Philosophical Concepts Behind

La Casa Sobre la Laguna
‘The House Over the Stream’

One day we were with Bill Tull (the designer of the home) after it had rained and the stream was running. Bill commented that it was too bad the stream didn’t run all the time.

My Husband John, a residential builder in California, said he could make that happen as he always added water features to his subdivisions. As the construction plans were drawn, John added the three windows in the floor. He felt since we were going to all the trouble to build a continuous running stream we should be able to enjoy it from inside the home.

When we were initially planning the home we asked Bill Tull to design a home that would allow all the members of our family to be under one roof, yet have their own privacy.

The guest suite to the left of the entry was for my parents who were in their late 70’s at the time. No stairs to climb, grab bars in the bathtub/shower, and no kitchen facilities, as my mother considered cooking to be the act of calling a caterer.

The upstairs guest casitas were designed for our two sons who would visit often, bringing their friends and enough musical instruments for a small orchestra. They could come and go as they wished, sit on the patio and play music, and enjoy snacks and drinks from “The Honor Bar”—their term.

We also asked Bill to design the home so that it looked as if a helicopter had flown over and dropped the house within the existing boulders and terrain. We didn’t want to level the natural desert and clear a building pad. Bill probably thought we were fanatical when we asked him to install a chain link fence within 18” from the foundation just so the natural vegetation would be preserved. Thus the natural setting of the home.

Regarding the master bedroom, we attribute our 38 year marriage to having separate bathroom and dressing areas. Thus the totally independent his and hers bathrooms and closets.

The cedar closet off the master suite on the way to the office housed my collection of antique clothing. John and I had a collection of horseless carriage cars and would wear the period clothing on car tours.

The various niches and ample wall space was designed to house our art. The walls are wired with a security system that allows the art to be alarmed 24/7 on its own. Built into the ceiling is art lighting that can be adjusted to spotlight individual art pieces.

The Dog Run was designed to protect small dogs from wildlife. With the dog door and enclosure the dogs can go in and out, at will, regardless of the weather.

The Media Room was designed for John’s extensive photography equipment and thousands of color slides. We built ample cabinet space and installed a large screen that retracts into the sofit.

The garage has a great deal of storage space that can be easily converted into a wine room. The owners needed the storage space for old car parts….someone else might rather have wine.

The garage is an oversized four-car garage allowing for getting into and out of a car without hitting the car parked next to it. The owners parked three modern cars (one being an oversized pick-up truck), a London Taxi, M.G., and golf cart in this garage.

The swimming pool area was designed to maximize privacy and the view, as the owners didn’t care to share their dinner and swimsuits with the golfers.

The round dining room with cove lighting was designed so that 10-12 people could sit comfortably at the table and enjoy a conversation with any other person in the group. With the dining room windows open, we could hear the stream below.
